3 Things Generally Not Covered By Homeowner's Insurance

If you own a home, you should have homeowner's insurance. Your homeowner's insurance will cover any damage to your house and the contents of your house. The insurance will repair or replace everything covered if the damage is caused by some natural disasters, theft, or vandalism. In general, floods and earthquakes aren't covered by homeowner's insurance, so if you live anywhere where those are common, you will need to get separate insurance to cover damage from those events. Those aren't the only things that your homeowner's insurance won't cover. It is important to know what those things are so that you can be prepared.

Infestations

If you have an infestation by insects, rodents, or other pests, your homeowner's insurance generally won't cover the cost of the removal of the infestation or any cleanup that you will have to do. Those things will usually have to come out of your pocket. If the infestation causes some damage to your house, that damage may be covered. Make sure to check with your homeowner's insurance company about what pest-caused damage may be covered. You should also ask if there is a chance that the removal of the infestation may be covered because your insurance may cover that in certain, very specific, conditions.

External Power Surges

While power surges that start on your property are covered, including lightning strikes, if they come from an external source, like the power company, they generally aren't going to be covered by your homeowner's insurance. If you sustain damage from a power surge or power outage coming from the electric company, you should contact the power company to see what coverage they may offer, especially if a power surge caused the damage.

Intentional Damage

This specifically means damage that a resident of your house purposely causes. So, if your home is vandalized by strangers or someone who isn't part of your household, you should still be covered. But, if someone who is a resident of the house decides to take a sledgehammer to the walls and windows just to cause damage, that isn't going to be covered. Your insurance is designed to cover things that happen by accident, not by something that you or someone else made a conscious decision to do.

It is important to have homeowner's insurance. It's also important to know what your policy does and doesn't cover so that you can make other provisions in case something that isn't covered happens.
